If you're trying to work out when to book a newborn photographer, the honest answer is earlier than you'd think. Most experienced newborn photographers in Melbourne are taking bookings 3 to 6 months in advance, sometimes more. The actual shoot happens in the first two weeks after baby arrives, but the booking needs to be locked in well before that.

This guide walks through the timeline trimester by trimester so you can plan around your due date without missing the window.

When to Book a Newborn Photographer (Short Answer)

The short version of when to book a newborn photographer:

  • Ideally book in your second trimester, around 20 to 28 weeks.
  • Third trimester is fine, just less choice of dates.
  • After baby arrives is too late for many established newborn photographers, especially in busy seasons.

The shoot itself happens in the first 14 days, ideally days 5 to 12. We'll lock the date in roughly once baby is born.

Why You Should Book a Newborn Photographer Before Baby Arrives

Two big reasons.

First, newborns photograph best in the first two weeks. They're sleepier, curl up more naturally, and haven't yet developed the strong neck muscles that make tightly-curled poses harder. Miss that window and the style of photo changes (still beautiful, just different).

Second, photographers' calendars fill up. A good newborn photographer Melton families like working with might be booking three to six months out, especially around peak baby seasons. If you wait until baby arrives to start ringing around, you'll either miss the two-week window or end up booking someone you're less excited about.

Booking ahead doesn't mean you're locked into a specific day. We pencil in a rough window based on your due date, then confirm the actual shoot date once baby has arrived.

Best Trimester to Book a Newborn Photographer

The sweet spot is the second trimester (around weeks 20 to 28).

  • You're past the early uncertainty of the first trimester.
  • You've had enough scans and check-ins to feel confident.
  • You're not yet exhausted in the way the third trimester can bring.
  • Photographers usually have wide availability.

If you're already in your third trimester, don't panic. Plenty of clients book between weeks 28 and 36, and good photographers will still have spots, just with less flexibility on dates. After 36 weeks is tighter, but a quick call is always worth it.

When to Book a Newborn Photographer If You're Already Past Your Due Date

Even if baby is here, it's still worth getting in touch. The first 14 days produce the most curled, sleepy newborn photos, but plenty of beautiful sessions happen at 3, 4, even 6 weeks. The style shifts slightly. Baby is more alert, more responsive, and the photos lean toward awake-eye, family-led images rather than the deep-sleep, tightly-curled look.

If baby is already a few weeks old:

  • Get in touch the same day or next.
  • Be flexible on the shoot date. Mid-week morning slots are usually easiest.
  • Consider doing the session at home rather than studio. It's easier on you, your partner and baby.

The most common mistake I see is parents thinking they've missed the window entirely and not bothering to book at all. That's a shame. Even a 5-week-old session is worth doing.

What Happens After You Book a Newborn Photographer

Once you've booked, here's roughly what happens:

  • You'll usually get a confirmation and a rough due-date window pencilled in.
  • Some photographers send a wardrobe and prep guide closer to the date.
  • You contact the photographer once baby has arrived, usually within the first few days.
  • The shoot happens 5 to 14 days later, depending on availability and how everyone is feeling.
  • Edited photos are typically delivered 2 to 4 weeks after the shoot.

Locking in the booking early means the only decision you need to make in those first few days is "when works best this week?" Everything else is already set.

Combining a Maternity Shoot When You Book a Newborn Photographer

A lot of clients ask about combining a maternity session with a newborn session.

  • The maternity shoot happens around 30 to 36 weeks.
  • The newborn shoot happens 5 to 14 days after baby is born.
  • Booking both at the same time means one less thing to organise during the late-pregnancy fog.

Most photographers, myself included, can offer a friendlier rate when you book both upfront. If you're already thinking about a maternity session, my guide on maternity photoshoot ideas covers the planning side. And once you're at the wardrobe stage, what to wear for a newborn shoot covers what works for the family in those first two weeks.

This is the simplest path: maternity session in the third trimester, newborn session in the first fortnight. Two sessions, one decision, no scrambling.

Ready to Book?

If you're 20 to 36 weeks into your pregnancy and wondering when to book a newborn photographer, this is the moment. Don't leave it until baby arrives. The shoot date stays flexible, but the booking itself is far easier to organise now.
