If you're trying to figure out what to wear for a newborn shoot, you're probably running on three hours of sleep and a half-finished cup of tea. Don't overthink it. Soft fabrics, calm colours and clothes you actually feel comfortable in will outperform any outfit you bought specifically for the day.
This guide breaks down what works for mum, dad, older siblings and baby, plus what to skip, so you can plan in five minutes and get back to the things that actually matter.
What to Wear for a Newborn Shoot: The Quick Answer
If you only read one thing, this is it.
- Soft, neutral colours. Cream, oat, beige, soft grey, dusty sage, dusty blue.
- Plain or barely-there textures. Knits, linen, cotton.
- Clothes that fit comfortably right now, not aspirationally.
- No loud logos, no big prints, no distractions.
- Coordinate the family palette. Don't match identically.
That's the whole formula for what to wear for a newborn shoot. The rest is detail.
What to Wear for a Newborn Shoot (For Mum)
You've just had a baby. The number one rule is comfort.
- A soft knit, wrap dress or fitted cotton top. Forgiving and flattering.
- Loose, flowing dresses if you'd rather not show your shape yet. Long jersey or linen dresses photograph beautifully.
- Easy-access tops if you'll be feeding during the session. Button-down or wrap styles are your friend.
- Bare feet at home, or simple sandals. Heels look out of place in newborn photos.
- Hair, however you wear it day-to-day. A relaxed half-up or down works well.
- Light makeup if you usually wear it. Skip if you don't. The photos look more honest.
Don't buy something new specifically for the shoot. Wear something you already feel good in, especially something soft enough to hold a baby in for 30 minutes without thinking about it.
What to Wear for a Newborn Shoot (For Dad)
Simple wins.
- A clean, plain t-shirt or henley in a soft neutral. White, cream, soft grey or muted earth tone.
- A button-down rolled at the sleeves works too. Avoid stiff dress shirts.
- Dark jeans or chinos in a neutral. Skip cargos and anything with big logos.
- Bare feet at home. Clean trainers or simple boots if outdoors.
- Trim the beard or stubble to your usual length. Don't try a new style on the day.
If you'll be holding baby on bare skin (a common request from many mums for this kind of session), it's worth having a soft tee on hand to throw on after.
What to Wear for a Newborn Shoot (For Older Siblings)
Older siblings are the wildcard. They often bring the most spontaneous, beautiful moments to a newborn shoot, but only if they're comfortable.
- Soft knits, simple cotton dresses or plain tops in the family palette.
- Bare feet, soft socks, or simple shoes.
- Avoid scratchy fabrics, stiff collars or anything they'll be tugging at.
- Skip costumes, character clothing or anything with prominent branding.
- Bring a backup outfit. Spit-up and snack drips happen.
If your older child is feeling possessive or uncertain about the new baby (very normal), a soft, familiar outfit helps them feel calm.
What Baby Wears (or Doesn't)
For most newborn shoots, baby is either in a soft wrap, a simple plain onesie, or undressed for skin-on-skin shots. Practical points:
- Keep the room warm. Newborns get cold fast.
- Soft, plain wraps in cream, oat or sage photograph beautifully.
- Avoid anything elastic that leaves marks on baby's skin.
- A simple bonnet or knitted hat can add a lovely touch but isn't essential.
- Skip themed outfits and anything with feathers, glitter or scratchy textures.
I'll usually let baby lead the session. If they're calm, we shoot. If they need to be fed or changed, we pause. No pressure.
What NOT to Wear for a Newborn Shoot
A few things that consistently work against newborn photos:
- Bright neon colours. They cast colour onto baby's skin in close-ups.
- Loud patterns and prints. They pull attention away from the baby.
- Logos and slogans. They date the photo immediately.
- Pure black for everyone. It can flatten the photo, especially in soft window light.
- Stiff formal wear. The session should feel like a quiet morning at home, not a wedding.
- Heavy jewellery. A simple ring or chain is fine. Big statement pieces aren't.
If you wouldn't comfortably wear it for a quiet morning at home with a newborn, skip it for the shoot too.
Ready for Your Newborn Shoot?
Once you've sorted what to wear for a newborn shoot, the rest is mostly about timing and patience. The best sessions are the calm ones, where everyone in the family is dressed comfortably and the baby leads the pace.
If you're still in the planning phase, my guide on when to book a newborn photographer covers the timeline question (book during pregnancy, shoot in the first two weeks) so you don't miss the window.
