Most mums-to-be I meet say the same thing: they want maternity photoshoot ideas that don't feel awkward, overly posed or like every other Pinterest board. The good news is the best maternity sessions are usually the simplest. A bit of soft light, an outfit you actually feel comfortable in, and a photographer who isn't pushing you into shapes that don't suit you.
Here's how I think about maternity photoshoot ideas as a Melbourne photographer working across Melton, the western suburbs and the Macedon Ranges. None of this is a rule. Use what feels right for you and skip the rest.
Outdoor and Natural Light Maternity Photoshoot Ideas
Outdoor sessions give you space, depth and that soft late-afternoon light that flatters most skin tones. A few maternity photoshoot ideas that work well outdoors:
- A grass paddock or open field at golden hour. The light spills sideways and softens everything.
- A tree-lined path or quiet country road. Great for a slow walk while I shoot, which usually loosens people up faster than standing still.
- A backyard you already love. Familiar surroundings often produce more relaxed photos than any park.
- A lake or reservoir for reflection and calm water in the background.
If you're not sure where to shoot, my round-up of the best family photo locations in Melbourne's west covers locations that suit maternity sessions just as well.
Studio and Indoor Maternity Photoshoot Ideas
Outdoor isn't for everyone. If the weather's unpredictable or you're closer to your due date and don't want to travel far, indoor maternity photoshoot ideas can be just as strong.
- At-home sessions in your bedroom or living room with window light. Bare walls, a made bed and a slow morning produce some of my favourite frames.
- A simple studio set-up with one big window and a neutral backdrop. Clean, calm and timeless.
- The nursery, if it's already set up. Photos in the room your baby will sleep in tend to feel meaningful years later.
I'd usually recommend booking these mid-morning or mid-afternoon when the light through the windows is at its softest.
Including Your Partner in Your Maternity Photoshoot
Your partner doesn't need to do anything fancy. Maternity photoshoot ideas with a partner work best when they're simply present, not trying to pose. Some prompts I use:
- Standing behind you with hands on the bump.
- Foreheads touching, eyes closed.
- Walking slowly side by side while you talk.
- A quiet moment on the couch at home with one hand on the bump.
The aim is connection, not perfection. If you and your partner are both feeling a bit awkward at the start, that's normal. Five minutes in, most couples have settled.
Including Older Siblings in Your Maternity Photoshoot
If you have older kids, including them is one of the most rewarding maternity photoshoot ideas you can plan. A few things that help:
- Keep the session short for the kids. Ten or fifteen minutes of their involvement is usually plenty.
- Let them touch or kiss the bump. These photos age incredibly well.
- Bring a snack and water. Hungry, tired toddlers are not going to play along.
- Plan their part for the start, not the end. Their patience runs out faster than yours.
Once the sibling photos are done, I usually let the kids run around or rest while I shoot you and your partner.
Wardrobe Ideas for Your Maternity Photoshoot
This is where most people get stuck. The simple version: wear something that fits you well now, in a colour and texture you actually like.
- Long flowing dresses in soft, neutral colours photograph beautifully.
- A fitted dress or top that hugs the bump shows the shape clearly.
- A simple white shirt with jeans is very underrated and looks timeless.
- Bare skin (think a wrap, sheer fabric or just hands on the bump in a comfortable bra) is a personal call. If it feels right, it usually photographs well too.
Avoid loud prints, big logos, and anything you keep tugging at. If you're worried, bring two or three options and we'll choose on the day.
When to Book Your Maternity Photoshoot
Most clients book somewhere between 30 and 36 weeks. That window is the sweet spot. The bump is clearly visible, you're not so close to your due date that you're uncomfortable on your feet for an hour, and there's still time to get the photos back before baby arrives. If you'd like more on this, I've written a full guide on when to book a newborn photographer which covers the maternity timeline too.
If you're already past 36 weeks, don't stress. I can usually still fit you in and we'll keep the session short and seated.
Your Next Step
If any of these maternity photoshoot ideas feel right for you, the next step is to talk through what you'd actually like. I'm a maternity photographer Melton families and west-side mums-to-be book regularly, and I'll plan the shoot around your timeline, your wardrobe and your comfort level rather than pushing a template at you. If you're already thinking about newborn photography in Melton too, we can talk about combining both into one booking.
