When clients ask me where the best family photo locations in Melbourne's west are, my honest answer is that it depends more on light, time of day and the family than it does on the location itself. A backyard at golden hour beats a famous lookout in flat midday sun, every time. That said, there are some genuinely excellent spots out west that suit family shoots well, and a few that I quietly steer people away from.

This guide walks through the locations I find myself returning to, what each one is good for, and how to pick the best family photo location in Melbourne for your specific session.

What Makes the Best Family Photo Locations in Melbourne

Before talking specific spots, here's what actually makes one of the best family photo locations in Melbourne work:

  • Soft, even light. North or east-facing aspects late in the day, or open shade at any time.
  • Space for kids to move. Tightly packed locations stress small children and the photos show it.
  • A clean, simple background. Less clutter means more focus on the family.
  • Easy parking and toilets. Practical, but the difference between a relaxed session and a stressed one.
  • Permission to shoot. Public parks are fine for personal sessions. Some bigger locations require permits.

If a location ticks four of those five, it'll usually produce strong photos.

Best Family Photo Locations in Melbourne's West for Soft Light

These spots have great late-afternoon light and quiet pockets that work for relaxed family sessions.

  • Caroline Springs Lake. The boardwalks, grassy edges and water reflections give you variety in a small radius. Gentle slope, good for grandparents.
  • Melton Botanic Garden. Mature trees, clear paths and several quiet corners. One of the most underrated of the best family photo locations in Melbourne for west-side families.
  • Werribee River walking trails. Long stretches of grass and treeline, less foot traffic than the bigger parks.

For all three, plan for the last 90 minutes before sunset. The light is the entire point.

Best Family Photo Locations in Melbourne for Big Open Spaces

If your family wants room to breathe and that wide horizon look:

  • Toolern Reservoir Park (Melton). Big sky, open fields, long grass at the right time of year. Toddlers love it.
  • Lerderderg State Park (Bacchus Marsh). Bushland and rocky river beds for a more rugged look. A short drive from Melton.

These are great for older kids who can run, less ideal for crawling babies because of the longer grass and uneven ground in places.

Best Family Photo Locations in Melbourne for Toddler-Friendly Shoots

Toddlers don't read the brief. The best family photo location in Melbourne for a toddler is one where they can move, snack, and not feel trapped.

  • Caroline Springs Lake. Loop walk means they're never far from the start.
  • Melton Botanic Garden. Plenty of paths and benches. Easy to reset if a meltdown starts.
  • Your own backyard or front yard. Genuinely. Familiar surroundings, their own toys nearby, and zero parking stress.

For toddlers I usually plan for 45 to 60 minutes maximum. After that, the photos start getting harder for the right reasons.

Best Family Photo Locations in Melbourne for All-Weather Backups

Melbourne's weather doesn't always cooperate. Locations with shelter or strong indoor backup options are worth knowing about.

  • Your home. Window-light at-home shoots are some of my favourite frames. Very practical when the forecast says rain.
  • Werribee Open Range Zoo or Werribee Park (mention only). I don't shoot inside paid attractions without proper permits, but families occasionally pair a private session at home with a family day at one of these afterward.
  • Covered park rotundas at Caroline Springs Lake or Melton Botanic Garden. Useful if a quick shower passes through.

If the forecast is genuinely bad, rescheduling is almost always the better call. Family photos look like family photos. Photos taken in a downpour look like reluctant photos taken in a downpour.

Picking the Best Family Photo Location in Melbourne for Your Shoot

Here's how I'd think about it for your specific session:

  • Babies and crawlers: at home or a small park with shade. Comfort first.
  • Toddlers and pre-schoolers: short loop locations like Caroline Springs Lake.
  • School-age and teens: bigger open spaces like Toolern Reservoir Park or Lerderderg.
  • Multi-generational shoots with grandparents: easy parking and flat ground. Melton Botanic Garden is hard to beat.
  • Big extended families: wide-open spaces with room to spread out.

If you're not sure, send me a quick note about the family and I'll usually have one or two specific recommendations within minutes.

A good rule of thumb: pick the location based on the smallest, oldest or least mobile member of your family. They'll set the pace.
